5 Days in Jerusalem on a Backpacker Budget
How to do Jerusalem properly for ₪2,500 — including a capsule, the Old City, food at Mahane Yehuda, and one nice splurge.
Jerusalem doesn't have to break your bank. With smart choices on where to sleep, eat, and roam, ₪2,500 (~$675) covers five full days — capsule, Israeli breakfasts, the Old City, museums, and even a memorable splurge meal. Here's the budget that's worked for hundreds of guests at our capsule hostel on Jaffa Street.
Day 1 — Arrive and find your bearings
Train from Ben Gurion Airport to Yitzhak Navon Station (₪16, 35 minutes), then Light Rail to Jaffa Center — total ₪22 to our front door. Drop your pack in your capsule, lock your locker, take a 90-second nap.
Walk 5 minutes to Mahane Yehuda Market for sundown. Fresh hummus from Pinati (₪22), a local craft beer at Beer Bazaar (₪22). Bedtime in your pod with Netflix on the smart TV.
Day 1 total: around ₪200 (transit ₪22, capsule ₪149, dinner ₪40).
Day 2 — The Old City
Free walking tour at 11am from Jaffa Gate (just tip — ₪50 is fair). Lunch: hummus at Lina near the Holy Sepulchre (₪35). Touch the Western Wall, walk the Cardo, find the rooftops above the Jewish Quarter — free, mind-blowing views the tour guides won't show you.
Back at Capsule BH for a kitchen-cooked dinner: pasta with vegetables from the morning market (₪25).
Day 2 total: around ₪260.
Day 3 — Markets and museums
Mahane Yehuda by daylight is a different planet. Iraqi-style sambusek at Morduch (₪30). Hop the Light Rail to the Israel Museum (₪50 entry, ₪25 student) — the Shrine of the Book and the Israel exhibitions are world-class.
Dinner: shakshuka at Tmol Shilshom (₪48). Stroll back through the quiet alleys of Nachlaot at night.
Day 3 total: around ₪320.
Day 4 — One nice splurge day
Morning at Yad Vashem (free, two hours minimum). Afternoon at Mamilla Mall (window-shopping is also free).
Evening: a real splurge. Machneyuda restaurant. ₪200 for an unforgettable tasting menu of modern Israeli food. Worth it.
Day 4 total: around ₪430.
Day 5 — Last bites and goodbye
Sunrise at the Mount of Olives (₪25 taxi each way — worth every shekel for one view). Final breakfast at Café Aroma (₪30). Pick up your pack from the locker, Light Rail back to Yitzhak Navon, train to airport.
Day 5 total: around ₪240.
The math
Five days, four nights. ₪2,046 covers transit, capsule (₪149 × 4 = ₪596), every meal, two museums, and one fancy dinner. The remaining ₪450 of a ₪2,500 budget is your cushion for tipsy nights, gifts, and the surprise museum exhibition you'll inevitably walk into.
What you don't need to spend on: bottled water (Jerusalem tap is excellent), tour guides for 90% of the Old City (free walking tours are great), and taxis if you can walk 15 minutes (we did 5 days with 3 taxi rides total).
